We love all aspects of hair and makeup, so when film writer and director Chad Cunningham, owner of Wild Heart Studios, asked us to fashion the zombie for his short film, “Daisy”, we were all in! This film was created for the Knoxville Film Festival/Knoxville Horror Film Festival 7 day shootout, and was a huge success. See the video at the bottom of this post.
Bringing this zombie to life, and showcasing our diverse talents for “camera ready” makeup and hair was a pleasure. The opportunity to work closely with a team of Knoxville’s finest wasn’t half bad either! Equipped with our favorite cinematic makeup, theatrical blood and a little conditioner to grunge up her hair, we transformed 10 year old Brooklyn McMillan from a cute little girl into something you would rather not run into in the dark.
The look for Brooklyn was to be a “freshly dead” zombie, so we saved most of the open sores and gore for another day. Starting the look, we covered everything exposed, her face, neck and hands with grey makeup. Multiple shades of grey and black were used to create a dimensional bone structure, giving parts of her face a sunken in appearance. The most crucial tool used was the stippling sponge, applying hundreds of tiny little dots of color, which resulted in her eerie skin texture. A few smears of a rotten green color, some splashes of blood dripping from her mouth and hands, and our zombie was born.
In the film, Brooklyn’s older brother (Shane Smith) loses a lot of sleep battling the reality of how he must deal with his little sister turned zombie, and we didn’t want to leave him out! To give his eyes the bloodshot affect, we simply lined his lower water line with a deep purple liner, and smudged some purple and black shadows under each eye, dragging them in a downward motion. He certainly looks sleep deprived to us.
“Daisy” premiered at the Regal Downtown West theater, and with it, Chad took home the 2014 ORNL Federal Credit Union Emerging Filmmaker Award. The film was also chosen, among others, to represent the Knoxville Film Festival on the Comcast XFinity On Demand Film Festival Collective Program which will be featured for 90 days. Having a hand in this short film and getting the chance to break out of our usual day to day styling work was a fabulous experience for us. Be sure to check it out!
“Daisy” was a success due to the impressive team who helped make it.
